Tweetbot for Mac

It’s finally here! (sort of)

Tweetbot for Mac is finally available! However it may not be quite as you had hoped. Developing for the Mac is no easy task, especially a full-featured Twitter client. However, we’ve gotten to a point where while not complete, it is useable. We’ve decided to release it as a public alpha to a) motivate us to finish faster, and b) get feedback to help us build the best Mac incarnation of Tweetbot we can make. You can love it or hate it, but rest assured it will only get much much better from here.

Introducing a new scientist.

As you may have noticed, Paul has been hard at work this year with many great updates to the iOS versions of Tweetbot. So how have we been working just as hard on a Mac version at the same time? We would like to introduce our Canadian friend, Todd Thomas (@toddthomas). While much of the underlying twitter code is Paul’s, Todd has been working hard to bring Tweetbot to the Mac. Follow him on twitter, but don’t bug him too much as he’s got a lot of work ahead of him.

So what can I expect from this alpha?

Bugs! Lots of them.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Sending us bug and crash reports will help us out a lot. You can do so by hitting “Send Feedback” from the Help menu in Tweetbot for Mac.

Missing features.

We’ve been focusing on replicating the core features of our iOS versions. Features like multiple windows will be coming in the future. You can open a new window by hitting command-shift-n, but rest assure it will be much more elegant in the future.

Disturbing graphics and performance issues.

Okay, not disturbing to most of you, but some designers can get pretty disgusted by the slightest mis-aligned pixel. Don’t be alarmed, we plan on making everything as beautiful and pixel perfect as we can. Throwing things on the canvas is just part of our process. And no, the egg icon isn’t the final icon. It was thrown together for alpha/beta purposes. We also spend most of our time optimizing performance towards the end of development.

No support.

This is a public alpha so run it at your own risk. When you run into issues, we’d love it if you would send us a report. However we can’t respond or spend time helping you get things up and running or else we’ll end up spending time with support and not getting the app done.

No Notification Center or iCloud support (in the alpha/beta).

There’s no way we can offer them until the app is signed and goes through the app store. They will work in the shipping product.

Updates and Expiring alpha/betas.

Updates will be automatically pushed out to you. We suggest you install them as each new build will fix bugs and possibly add new functionality. Old builds will also expire after a certain period of time.

Answers to some common questions.

Will Tweetbot for Mac be free?

No, we plan to charge for the app in the app store once we hit version 1.0. Until then, you get to use our app for free. Think of it as a long term trial. When we hit 1.0, you’ll know whether it’s worth your hard earned cash or not.

How long will it be in alpha/beta?

As long as it needs to be. We would like to earn money for our hard work as soon as possible, but we won’t sell anything short of a quality product.

How much will you charge for it?

We haven’t decided yet.

Is it retina ready?

For the most part yes. However some of us are still waiting for our retina macbook pros so until then, there are a few glitches here and there.

Which versions of OS X will it support?

The alpha version supports 10.7+, but the shipping product will only support 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or later. We will be taking full advantage of features only available in 10.8. We will most likely be dropping 10.7 support sometime after 10.8 is available to the public.

So um…where do I get this so called “alpha”?

It would be great to have a preference to disable those 5 action icons from showing on hover. Scrolling through my timeline and seeing those constantly pop in and out is really distracting from the content.

I’d really like to see two things:
1. iCloud support where tweetbot for Mac and tweetbot for iOS communicate with each other and tweets that are unread or read will be the same between all devices.

For example: I read all my tweets at 12pm and then lock my iPhone. I don’t pay attention to my timeline until I get home and log in with my Mac. My Mac tweetbot then will only show “new” tweets as all that have occurred since 12pm that day.

2. I’d like tweetbot for iOS (i know this is Mac only for this thread) to have push notifications that inform you when selected people tweet much like the native iOS twitter client just implemented.

other than that… You guys are golden.

thanx for listening to the community! I don’t mind paying for excellent, intuitive apps! keep up the good work!

Thanks for the release. Looks promising! One feature I can’t seem to find on any desktop client (save the ghastly TweetDeck) is the option to select the account when doing a standard retweet (NOT a retweet with comment.) You support this on iOS and its very handy. Sometimes I’m in one account and see something I want to retweet via another account. Please, please add this?

Looks great on the rMBP – so so much better than the official twitter app. But one q: is there a keyboard shortcut to scroll down one page? Space bar would be nice. As it is, down arrow goes down one tweet and cmd-arrow goes to the bottom. thanks!

This product in Alpha Stage blows away other finished products in the market. Love it! Keep it up guys!

So far, it looks fantastic for an alpha. Look forward to what’s to come. My only wish is for a menu-bar icon, much like (sorry!) the one for the official Twitter client. I find the combination of quick window open/close and colour-coded notifications hugely useful. Thanks, whatever.

Would be nice to have it for free for the people who bought iOS versions. IMHO paying for iPad and iPhone version seperately is enough.

FYI, the gear icon in the lower right corner doesn’t work. I assume that’s where I can go to submit feedback?

In the meantime I’m just using the email link on the alpha download page.

Thanks for coming out with this. I love TweetBot for iOS.

This is absolutely amazing!! Great jobs guys. I can’t imagine what the finished product will look like. I’d surely pay for this. BUTTTTT, no 10.7 support??? I’m one of those folks that are gonna be screwed out of a 10.8 update(older machine).

I understand that some of the features are reliant on 10.8 but maybe keep this version around for us 10.7 folks?

Regardless, its a great app. I use it on my phone and now i use it here.
Thanks

Would be nice if you could have the option to view Tweetbot fullscreen in the final version. If you would go to fullscreen mode it would become like tweetdeck with multiple columns for lists.

Thank you for giving us an alpha of TweetBot for Mac. It’s working exceptional well for an early iteration. I also applaud your choice of OS X 10.8 for the 1.0 release. Bravo!

A very nice job so far and so far still solid for me. I assume the gear icon at the bottom right will eventually link to the preferences.

A few suggestions:

1) Please give us a keyboard shortcut for fast switching/cycling among accounts, for those of us who would rather not have even more windows cluttering up our monitors.

2) With multiple windows, please enable the keyboard shortcut for switching among windows.

3) Menu bar notifications?

4) Maybe an optional colour scheme that matches the Mac OS more closely, i.e. light rather than dark. I like the dark scheme on my iPad, it puts the focus on the tweets, but on the Mac Tweetbot is kind of looking like a black hole.

I am not a big fan of the robots inspired UI of your products (even if I bought and use some of them!), but I am impressed by Tweetbot for Mac, feature wise.

So, even if I would prefer the interface to match OS X more closely, it has already replaced my old client!

Nice. Thanks for the free “trial.” :) I like this client a lot already.

Agreed with some of the others; wish that the 5 action icons didn’t show up on hover for EVERY tweet.

Also, it may be me, or a fix is in the works–I tried clicking all the items to the right, and then couldn’t get back to my stream very easily.

Thanks again, Devs!

This should be an option of course. Thanks!

I don’t think it would be wise to work on getting tweetbot to work with Growl until ML comes out and Growl comes out with it’s ML version. I believe Growl is in development now for ML.

Having downloaded Tweetbot Mac a few hours ago, I find that it somewhat syncs with iOS devices. When I first installed it it was syncing fine with my iPhone and iPad. I left it going for about an hour while I ran some errands. I used Tweetbot on my iPhone during that time. When I returned home, Tweetbot Mac hadn’t done any syncing. I restarted the app on my Mac and it then showed all messages. BTW, I’m using an 11″ MBA mid-2011.

Now for some good things to say LOL I have always jumped from twitter app to twitter app, using one for a week or so and jumping to another one. When Tweetbot came out, I tried it and have been with it ever since. When Twitter was integrated into iOS, I tried it for 2 days. I went back to Tweetbot and have stayed ever since. It does everything I want it to do.

Tweetbot Mac, I jumped on the chance to alpha and beta it. I didn’t like Twitter Mac nor Echofon although it was the best until Tweetbot Mac. I really like that Tweetbot has an option to insert a picture rather than having to drag the picture from the desktop into the message. I also like that it works almost like the iOS version. No need to learn to use it all over again.

There are some things I’d like to see implemented but this is an alpha and so there will be more things implemented in the near future. One thing that I’d like to see implemented is an option to press the enter/return key to send a message. As it is right now, without thinking I automatically press return and then remember to press send. It’s a habit from using other twitter apps.

This is the first time I’ve ever alpha tested an app of any sort. I have beta tested a few apps. It’s a fun process, watching an app grow. Thanks for putting out a public alpha.

Would LOVE to see the ability to Color Code specific people I follow so it would be easier to spot their tweets within my timeline. “Plume: has the ability to do this and it is very nice, but the rest of that app kinda stunk. Glad to finally have this on Mac. Even though it’s an alpha, it’s better than the official Twitter client for Mac in most ways. There are a few annoyances like not being able to copy and paste links into the tweet window, but I assume obvious things like that are already known.

It’s off to a great start and I will certainly be purchasing a copy once it’s final.

I heard a lot of good things about your app so far, but I cannot understand this policy, that more and more professional developers are only supporting the latest platforms available. I’ve been working as a web developer for a couple of years and I can understand the grief, developers have with old platforms. I had to optimize websites for IE 6 and other software crimes. Trust me, that was a horrible time â¦

But I think this is different situation. Sure, nobody is forced to buy your product, but you are leaving a lot of people/paying customers out. Apple changed their strategy a couple of years ago, from selling pricey hardware and pricey software to selling pricey hardware and giving their software away for a little price or even for free. They don’t care, because you already paid for the software by buying the hardware. Just think about your users, and think about common sense. Your business is based on software, and your users should’t be afraid of being left out with the next software update, that comes from Apple. Some people in a corporate environment or with older Macs don’t even have the choice. Be honest to yourself, a computer is just a tool. And you cannot tell me, that Tweetbot could not possibly run on 10.7. Should you force a lot of your users to buy a new Mac just because you did not invest that little extra time to support the current and the last generation of OS X?

Like I said, I don’t have to buy your product, but I am sure, that there are a lot of other people like me, who really would like to do so, but just don’t want to update their OS every year oder buy a new computer before it’s broken.

Greetings,
Fabian

For all of you that don’t know yet, XMS+enter will send a tweet. If any of you have found other key commands that work, please post.

If columns are going to be in the final release, will there still be the option to have the 1 column as it is now? Columns, for me, take up too much real estate. Having the side icons light up, as they do now, work s really well.

Gonna enjoy this, really enjoy both your iPhone and iPad apps, but I can tell you the one thing I really really really wish you would do is the ONE THING Tweetcaster does do which is allow you to post a tweet to MULTIPLE accounts at the same time. This would make you BLOW anything dumb like Hootsuite out of the water and put you at the top….amazing not even twitter has this feature.

Looking forward to updating my review to include the latest arrival to your family.

Thanks.

Off to a great start. Some quick notes:

You can use Notification Center without being in the App Store. You just can’t use it via Apple’s Push Service without being in the App Store. So for local notifications while the app is running (what I’d expect) you can do this now.

I’ve configured AlfredApp to launch/show & hide the app with a global hotkey, which works great until you get official support for it.

Good stuff!

I love what you’ve done thus far with this. Even the lack of Growl support isn’t too much of a bother considering the pin-to-top functionality. One suggestion I have, though, is that I found myself really wanting Buffer support when using this. It’d be a great addition and would put you a step above a bunch of other Twitter clients.

Either way, if this is the alpha, I can’t wait to see what you do with the version 1.0! :)

SO PUMPED to have this to try out.

1. Understanding that they may be features-in-the-works, I’d love some system-wide keyboard shortcut ability, like show/hide app, new tweet, or stuff like that.

2. Also, I’d love to be able to add a custom image upload service, like the iOS version, so I can use MLKSHK.

3. Left arrow to view conversation, like swiping right in iOS (to “go left”) would be nice.

4. Finally, some kind of dock/menubar indicator that there are new tweets would be aces.

You guys, this is fantastic. I’m so happy to participate in the trial process, and I hope you get lots of great, useful feedback.

But I REALLY hope that Twitter’s API shenanigans don’t make us all say a collective, “This is why we can’t have nice things”.

My very important, entitlement complex powered, must have feature requests:

1. For everyone else to stop asking for features so tapbot can focus on stability and core functionality.
2. For tapbot to then surprise us pleasantly with features we didn’t know we needed, like they did on iOS.

For being an alpha its incredibly stable! Opened it this morning and haven’t closed it since! Its nice to see you brought over the mute feature from iOS.

A suggestion (and know that I know nothing about what this would take):

Some kind of Tapbots account where settings can be saved and pushed to similar clients. So when I say on my iPhone “Mute James” when I log into my Tapbot account in Tweetbot for Mac, that mute command transfers.

That app is AMAZING, guys! Everyone should be proud! I’ve gifted Tweetbot about ten times and its lead to them buying the rest of your great products! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Looks fantastic and pretty stable for an Alpha.

Some possible feature requests:
1) Is it possible to see multiple accounts in the sidebar (a la Sparrow) so that that switching accounts is just a single click instead of the two now?
2) This might be overwhelming to read but is it possible to have a unified timeline?
3) Can we open links in app instead of getting booted off to a browser?

Just a suggestion for a huge (very huge) confort : it will be fine if you insert the support with Growl.

Looks great!

When you are composing a tweet and use an @ or # for autocomplete, if you do NOT select one from the list and then click tweet, the window with the suggestions remains on the screen and the app will then NOT allow functions in the main window app such as search results, icon click to view profile etc. Attempting to do these things while the autocomplete window is still open will eventually crash the app.

I hope I described the problem well.

Without a doubt, I’m a HUGE fan of Tweetbot for iPhone, and it’s my default. So as the Mac app which I got so excited it’s finally been released,

After using it, I got some notices I wanted to share, and maybe more in future :)

1. As clicking an image thumbnail shows a loading circle, if it didn’t load Or clicked again; it shows another circle & another & another :)

Suggestions:
1. MENU BAR ICON! this is the most important (lovable) feature for any Mac user, and for Twitter it’s more requirable.

2. I got two accounts, so it’d be better if the other account appears below the current showing one (its profile image) same as in Twitter’s default app. I didn’t like that I have to click the current one to show the other one & switch.

3. Ability to change the places of sections’ icons (Mentions, Messages, Lists, etc.) – OR maybe just changing the Profile icon/section to the top, or below. Not sure about its current place …

That’s what I got so far as I just started using it, so I hope you accept them and any ones I send you in future, hopefully not many :)

Keep up the great work! & Thank you ;)

It looks great! And for an alpha its already replaced my normal twitter client for my mac (but who really uses twitter on their computer anyway?).

The only feature I’d love to see in the final version is syncing between different Tweetbot clients. So, if I’ve muted some loud mouthed Packer fan on my phone, that same guy is muted on my computer (in tweetbot of course)!

Awesome!

First off, Tweetbot for Mac is a great looking app. I don’t require a lot out of a Twitter client so I don’t really have any criticisms but I do think I’ve found some bugs/enhancements that I’d like to point out. Ironically, my first attempt to tweet from Tweetbot for Mac crashed the app but since then, it’s ran fine. (There was this one time where Tweetbot refused to update my stream but restarting the app worked and it only happened once.) So, here’s my list:

Bugs
—-
* CMD+V doesn’t paste
* Help > Send Feedback button doesn’t work (Puts focus on Google Chrome but no new tab/window opens to the feedback location)
* Settings button (The little gear/cog in the bottom right-hand corner) does nothing

Enhancements
————
* Dock Icon features (Buttons in the context-mention for “right-clicking” the running Tweetbot application icon in the Dock)
* Menubar Icon features (Would be nice to hide the Tweetbot UI and have it running in the background accessible from a menubar icon)
* URL shortener features to shorten a URL in the app prior to sending, selecting your own url shortener with your own credentials, etc.

If I find more bugs or come up with more enhancement/feature ideas, I’ll come back.

P.S. - I am sure I’m not the one reporting these but I didn’t have time to read every comment above.

Thx good application.

I’d love the ability to have multiple read it later services such as pinboard and instapaper instead of having to choose just one.

This goes for iPhone and iPad as well.

I’ve being using the Alpha for 2 hours – and it’s already my default desktop Twitter client. Lovely.

I love it, and I agree with all the people observing that it’s already more stable than Twitter for the Mac.

However, is it just a quirk of my system that hitting the spacebar moves up, showing more recent tweets, rather than down like all reasonable user interface conventions since the dawn of Unix dictate? I have to do shift-spacebar to move down. This is wrong.

Great work overall, though.

I just picked up a MacBook Retina yesterday and Tweetbot looks fantastic on it. Are there any plans for a full screen app mode?

Looking wonderful: in fact I was so impressed that I bought the tweetbot apps for my iPhone and iPad on the strength of this aplha!

But it’s a pita that none of the url-shortening options appear to be working (yet). That’s going to stop me using this for the time being. And just to add to what some others have said, the settings icon (gear) bottom right, isn’t working for me.

Very much looking forward to the finished product.

I copy this bcos it’s very good ideas!

1. iCloud support where tweetbot for Mac and tweetbot for iOS communicate with each other and tweets that are unread or read will be the same between all devices.

For example: I read all my tweets at 12pm and then lock my iPhone. I donât pay attention to my timeline until I get home and log in with my Mac. My Mac tweetbot then will only show ânewâ tweets as all that have occurred since 12pm that day.

2. Iâd like tweetbot for iOS (i know this is Mac only for this thread) to have push notifications that inform you when selected people tweet much like the native iOS twitter client just implemented.

I’m really curious why this is (currently) 10.7/Lion only, and what features of 10.8/Mountain Lion are required that will make you go Mountain Lion-only.

(My main home Mac is running 10.6.8/Snow Leopard and it’s super-stable so I am not inclined to upgrade it for awhile. My other home Macs can’t run Lion either. Yes I’m butt hurt.)

It’s great to see that Tweetbot for the Mac has arrived… Well almost. However, I’m very cautious about downloading pre-release versions of software. Tapbots have added a disclaimer… “Use at your own risk”. They’re strong words.

Q: What are the chances that the Alpha version of Tweetbot has security flaws?

Too bad this is not available for those of us who have 10.6. My iMac runs great on Snow Leopard and I won’t be doing an upgrade. I could use it on my laptop that’s running on 10.7, but it’s too bad knowing that support won’t be available for that either.

Any chances of making it available for older versions in the future?

feature requests:

1) You can click a picture in the timeline to open it. if we click the same picture again it should close it – instead of having to mouse over to the X on the picture. something akin to the preview function in osx.

2) allow links to open in background. when i click a link on my timeline, it should open it on a tab in chrome, but not switch to the browser. focus should retain on tweetbot. this way i can click multiple links from my timeline and go to the browser one time to read.

Great great job!

Quick feedback:

– the app should restart where we left it when quitting. It’s annoying to reload all the alerts and the default number of tweets if I close the app and reopen it one hour later!

– there are a few delays/lag when scrolling the timeline.

– please add option to configure sounds!

Using the command + 1 option to get to the tweets and command + 2 to get to replies etc is cool, but once IN your timeline or replies, a further command + 1 or 2 should take you to the top instead of having to physically click on the button or scroll up.

Otherwise, coming along very nicely. Can’t wait for the final.

I think I’m being dumb – when I close the window (Cmd-W), how do I get it back?!

In the new multi-column thing, how do I close a column? This all seems really unintuitive to me.

Again maybe I’m dumb, but I couldn’t even get the multi-column thing working until I realised you have to use the right-hand-side to dock. As TB is normally rightmost on my right-hand screen, I’d never have discovered that until someone showed me.

  • David Stevenson said:
  • August 3rd, 2012

Crikey, this is even less intuitive than I thought. Do remove a column so that I can close it, I have to grab a VERY subtle texture at the bottom, and move to the right.

Given that (as I said before) Twitter is the right-most thing on my screen, I couldn’t even discover that behaviour without finding tips above.

Only by moving the whole multi-column window to the left did i leave “room” to move a column to the right to detach it.

I know this is Alpha, and I do know what that means, so I hope my comments seem constructive. But the multi-column UI is a terrible mess at the moment IMO.

I’m a happy user of your iPhone and iPad app FWIW

I would love to be able to see a multiply reply function – in the past I used Tweetdeck but they’ve taken that function away in their new versions, most annoying when you have to reply to different users. As for the rest of it, great stuff, love how you can join up your columns, very innovative. Keep up the good work!

  • August 4th, 2012

@Russ Thanks for the tip but it still doesn’t seem to work. I made sure I turned on “Pin timeline to top when at top” but that still has no effect. Additional columns just sit there and don’t stream. Maybe this will be fixed before the full release. It’s still awesome just as it is anyways. :-)

Figured out the affordance necessary to split joined columns apart. Probably would be a good idea to make this more visible – once you realize it’s there, the process is actually very nice.

Love the “snap together” aspect of columns. It would be interesting to snap to the bottom of a window, too – so you could have a 2×2 set of windows scrolling.

Generally I love this alpha but the timeline has gone haywire in the latest update. Last position is lost and I frequently have to go through hours, if not a day, of tweets I have looked at. This has actually made me log out until the next update in the hope it is fixed. This was the only version with this issue.

Seriously, this is weird. As I stated above, Iâm using the OSX Alpha 0.6.3. I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app and everything. Further, I can get the popup for a new tweet to come up, and then i click on the little arrow at the top of the box and timeline appears but I cannot interact with it. Cannot scroll or anything, it is frozen.
