Mark, the Designer
Mark is a user interface designer who has been designing and building websites for over 10 years. He also enjoys drawing, photography, video games, and cars. He has a passion for creating things in all mediums. Mark lives in San Jose, CA with his wife, newborn son, and Shiba Inu.
Paul and Mark worked at Oakley, Inc. at the time. Paul was interested in designing a small app to test the market. He asked Mark if he would be interested in designing the UI for this little app, a simple weight tracker. Mark was excited to work on any iPhone app and thought a weight tracking app could be made interesting. At the time, the recently released Wii Fit provided a lot of inspiration, being simple and entertaining. We knew that was important for our app.
After a few initial sketch ideas of a futuristic weight scale, we noticed the basic shapes reminded us of Eve from Wall·e. We liked the idea of robots so our subsequent sketches and design prototypes took more cues from the movie. Then it finally hit us. What if each of our apps were a different robot? They could feel like part of the same family, but be unique in their own way based on the task they need to perform…a lot like the robots in Wall·e. And that’s how Tapbots was born.
