iCloud Sync

iCloud Sync is a feature that landed last Friday in Tweetbot version 2.2. There’s been a few questions about how it works and some have had issues getting it up and running. Hopefully this post will clear things up for some of you.

What is iCloud Sync?

With Tweetbot v2.2 or later, your mute filters and direct message read/unread status will be synced across all instances of Tweetbot. So if you mute someone on your iPhone, they will also be muted on your iPad. The same goes for direct messages. Read a DM in one place and it will be marked as read on your other devices.

Another feature of iCloud sync is keeping your timeline position in sync across your devices. This allows you to pick up where you left off reading in your timeline when going between them. In the past we’ve had Tweetmarker support which is a free third party service that allowed you to sync your timeline with any twitter client that supported this service. Tweetmarker is still an option for those who need it, however for everyone else, syncing your read position via iCloud is enabled by default. While it sometimes takes up to 30 seconds to sync, it works brilliantly.

What is the blue bookmark icon for?

This icon shows you the tweet that has been bookmarked as the last read position. However since this icon has confused so many people, we have removed it and will no longer show in Tweetbot v2.3.

I can’t get iCloud Sync to work at all. Help?

For most it should just work. But some of you might have altered the default configuration of Tweetbot and iCloud which prevent this feature to work properly. Here are a few steps to take:

  • In the iOS settings, go to iCloud and make sure you are logged into the service (with the same iCloud account on both devices)
  • In the iOS settings, go to iCloud and make sure “Documents & Data” are enabled. If “Use Cellular” is turned off, iCloud Sync may not work if you are not on a wifi network.
  • In Tweetbot, go to your Settings -> Username (under Account Settings) -> Sync and make sure iCloud is selected on both devices for the same account
  • If it’s still not working, try rebooting your device. The next step would be to try re-installing Tweetbot.

If you are still having issues, there’s not much more we can say to help besides asking you to try going through these steps again. We don’t have any access to iCloud itself so it’s hard to troubleshoot the issue any further.

I actually liked the bookmark feature :(

Could it come back as a more discreet feature? That would be nice!

I’d add to your troubleshooting guide to “Just wait”.

I had carried out all the steps above and it still wouldn’t work. Then after 24 hours, it just started working. Bit strange.

I really liked the blue bookmark feature. It helped me a lot. Anyway to get an option to turn it on?

Please please please please PLEASE release an OS X version. I want to use TweetBot so badly, but without a desktop client to sync to, it does me no good as I’ve learned that syncing timeline position is the one single feature I absolutely must have.

I missed two thing in Tweetbot. Fast switching between local and worldwide trending topics and syncing / bookmarking my last read tweet because I use both iPhone and iPad. This last one is solved beautifully! One to go…

I really use the blue bookmark can we have the option of it being on or off. I don’t understand why you would give us tweet-marker and replace that with iCloud (although iCloud does more than just sync my TL position), Then just get rid of it altogether. May you please please please give us back our blue marker and perhaps add simul-tweet.

Also, I do appreciate you for explaining iCloud Sync to some user that don’t understand it, I do.

Seriously though, thank you for being the best twitter app and you still are just give us back the blue bookmarker feature

First of all, thank you so much for this great app!
Two questions:
Can you keep the bookmark icon as an option, I got used to it since tweet marker and then iCloud…
Also, can you make a Mac AppStore version, I would pay for a Mac version and I’m sure many people will!!! Twitter via web is simply horrible :(

Put me down as another person requesting that you DO NOT remove the blue bookmark feature… I will not upgrade if that is remove because it is so helpful as a visual aid that the sync to iCloud has occurred! Anyone who asked for it to be removed should have their tweetbot license revoked ;)

Please don’t remove the blur bookmark feature. I have no desire to use iCloud , even though I fully understand & appreciate the benefits of this service. The blue flag icon is a quick & simple visual bookmark of your last read tweet , & works simply & most importantly reliably. I understand you wish to move with the times etc etc , however why take away something that works & pleases the users that have supported you & paid for your app. In many cases paid twice if like myself have the iPad app. At the very least offer an option to the user for it to be on or off.

Keep the blue bookmark! Please!

1. Thoroughly explained and should be clear to people that were confused beforehand. I had initial difficulty in getting it running smoothly but I put it down to my wifi connection.

2. I also think providing an option for the blue bookmark rather than just completely removing it would be most beneficial for 2.3.

3. I also would LOVE a Mac OS version of TweetBot. Seriously, just make it and take my money.

Great app, simply outstanding, keep on with the good work, I would love a Mac version to completely migrate my accounts to Tweetbot and have an awesome experience.

Anyway, please keep the bookmark as an option for those of us who like to see if iCloud is syncing and where it left off last time and disable it for those who don’t like it!

I like and I need the bookmark icon. Otherwise I cannot know what was the last position at timeline. I assume the cause of the confusion is that the blue icon is at the same position as fav icon. If the position is different, people will not complain. Or make the icon optional. Please note that quite many people need this function.

Looking at this blog I figured out why I couldn’t get the new sync to work so I had to go back to TweetMarker (and it’s not workin as well as in the past :( ) My company prevents us from syncing Documents and Data to the iCloud and thus can’t sync the iPhone.

And I agree that you need to have the blue bookmark. Helps verify that the syncing is working between devices…

Thanks for nothing, just the same as your twitter account, and by the way… YES I did do all the steps above, and even took the time to restore the device and do a clean install and it didn’t work

Please do NOT remove bookmark.. it took a while to figure out what it is then it’s so useful as number of following is increasing. at least option to on/off.

iCould sync worked from the day one. then it stopped working sometime.
I had 1 day worth of tweets that was on iPad which does not refresh while reading it on iPhone. after a while suddenly started syncing. I can’t seem to find what is the trigger… Could be the network status between iCloud server and myself? or amount of data to be loaded on tweetbot?

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME.

My problem is that the tweets for certain people who I follow never show up in my timeline. I can tell you for certain that I am indeed following them, they haven’t blocked me because I can see their tweets if I go directly to their page, and that I don’t have them muted.

Also, I’ve tried every method of troubleshooting I can think of from rebooting my phone to deleting and reinstalling the app. One example of someone whose tweets that never show up in my timeline is ironically tweetbot. None of their tweets show up in my timeline, but if I go directly to their profile I can view their tweets.

Does anyone know a solution to this or can point me to anything to help me resolve this?

Thanks.

Took a while to find but it’s in:

Accounts & Settings > Settings > Account Settings > Name_of_Account > Sync

There’s a “Visual Marker” toggle on off. The update defaults it to OFF, so you need to turn it back on to see it again…

Congrats on a great app.

+1 on restoring the bookmark icon.

More importantly, I hate the new format in which tweets that are emailed are sent. I see no need for including the tweeter’s icon, or the tapbots icon. Please at least restore the option to email tweets in plain text, without any added unnecessary, bandwidth-hogging, chrome. Thanks.
