Experimental Push Notification Q&A

There’s been a lot of questions and misunderstandings around our experimental push service so this post should help clear up a few things.

How do I access push notifications?

The push service works in Tweetbot 1.4.1 or later. To turn them on, go to the Tweetbot Settings (within the app). You should see a section called Account Settings with your account username. That’s where more settings exist specific for each of your accounts. Within that menu is the Push Notifications settings. Flipping one of the switches turns on the push service.

If you get a message saying you can’t access push, that means our beta slots are full and you have to try again later. If you get some sort of APS error message, that means you are still running 1.4 and need to update to 1.4.1.

I turned on push notifications, but I’m not getting anything.

  • Make sure the push notification switches are turned on in our app
  • Make sure you have notifications enabled for Tweetbot in the iOS system settings
  • Try restarting your device

If you are still having issues, It’s probably a network issue of some sort.

Why does the app crash when I get a notification in-app?

You device is probably jailbroken and you are running some system hack/app that is causing tweetbot to crash. One that has been known to cause the crash is Mobile Notifier.

Where are the notification badges?

These are available in 1.4.2 or later. If you don’t see them, make sure you have the latest update. If they still aren’t working, be sure to check your iOS notification settings for Tweetbot. There’s a toggle for badges there.

What about options like muting push during certain times and only pushing mentions from people I follow?

These are also tasks that we will look into later. Remember this is an early beta and we just want to make sure everything is running smoothly before we get into the finer details.

Can I change the notification sound?

No, the sounds we are using are also used within our app. We want to keep sounds consistent so they are instantly recognizable.

Questions about push in iOS 5.

iOS 5 is under NDA and we aren’t allowed to talk about it yet.

So is this service going to cost us money in the future?

Hopefully not, but we don’t have an answer for this right now. Our goal is to provide this service for free to our users, but servers and bandwidth costs money. We will see how things go over the next month or two and have a better idea of how much this service costs us.

You all have been great about keeping your users up-to-date about the push service. This is probably the best, most pro-active customer support I’ve received. And the push service works great so far!

Thanks for the heads up. Fingers crossed for the next update :)

Just wanted you to know that all your efforts, and even your restraint through implementation, are greatly appreciated by those of us who love excellence in our product experiences. Love love love tweetbot! Keep up the good work.

PS. FYI - Willing to pay my fair share if needed. =]

I haven’t seen an app get so much customer support and inform the userbase of what is actually going on and what to expect and what not to expect. Your app is my most used daily and having access to the push beta is great. They come instantly and every time ‘sliding to view’ the notification brings me to the correct place within the app. Thanks so much Paul and Mark.

These are all very specific point, excellent read. Thanks for posting these and explaining in such detail.

Thanks for staying dedicated to providing a great product without stretching yourself too thin. I, for one, am more than willing to pay for push.

Last night I was drinking some beers and I turned on the push notifications. They worked! Nice!
I’ve been using since yesterday and they work perfectly, even the in-app notifications, they are smooth and perfect.

Great work guys, hope you can make this a free service :)

Thanks for the info….tweetbot is an amazing app….so much better than any other twitter app I have tried.

No luck getting on the notification list yet but will keep trying.

but @boxcar is free already? and twitter for iphone does push also.
is this really necessary?

I use tweetbot for twitter and the rest for notifications only.

I’d be happy to pay a one time in app purchase for push notifications (tweetbot is a deserving product after all). Would not consider it as a subscription though.

We still waiting public released for this service…. I really need PUSH NOTIFY on my @tweetsbot

Ever since the Push Notifications beta went live, I’ve been having trouble with Boxcar – is this related?

For some reason, I’m not not getting notifications from Boxcar as I did before, or I’m only getting sporadic ones.

I’m guessing it’s nothing to do with Tweetbot, but it seems coincidental that it’s started happening as soon as you guys start testing push..

iOS 5 may be under a NDA but tweetbot is not. I have noticed that tweet has seemed to be missing alot of design overall, when will this be fixed?

Guys, anyone here is experiencing issues with the DM push notifications? I’m not receiving any! I’ve tried to unistall and intall the app twice and reset the device a few times with no luck.
I do understand it is a beta service so far but I would like to know if it is a general issue or it just happen with my devices.

regards!

Please consider making the push sounds customizable. As much as I like the current sound, it does not penetrate pockets very well. So I still have to use Boxcar for mentions and DMs if I don’t want to miss them. I am sure there are some loud robot sounds out there :)

Thank you for this wonderful app!

Mentions and DMs are working great for me.

I second Marcel on the custom sounds. I understand keeping it simple, but this would be really useful to me. I’d even pay for it (hint, hint).

I also like that Boxcar has ‘quiet times’. Unfortunately, they suspend all notifications. I’d like to see sounds turned off but leave on visual notifications.

No problem at all, pals, if they charge for push notifs, we’ll start using official Twitter app which is free and doesn’t charge anything for push notifs !!! Yay

I can’t seem to get push to work or even find where to turn it on. So frustrated right now. I really want alerts on screen and audibles. Any suggestions to fix it would be much appreciated.

Thanks to @tweetbot for letting me know, earlier today, that ‘quiet time’ (Sleep Options) is available in the latest release.

@Sara

To turn on notifications in Tweetbot:

1. Tap the accounts icon in the upper left (looks like two heads)
2. Tap “Accounts & Settings” under your account name
3. Tap “Settings” button at the bottom of the screen
4. Look for the “Account Settings” section and tap your Twitter account name
5. Tap “Notifications” to change your settings.

Once the settings are on, if you don’t get the notifications, try turning all of the settings off, then back on. I’ve seen a few tweets from @Tweetbot suggesting that as a fix.

Good luck!
